Story:Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited primarily engages in refining, storing, marketing, and distributing petroleum products primarily in India. It also involves in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The company has interests in 27 exploration blocks in India, Australia, Brazil, East Timor, Indonesia, Mozambique, and the United Kingdom. Its product line includes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, motor spirit, special boiling point spirit/hexane, benzene, toluene, polypropylene feedstock, and regassified-LNG; aviation turbine fuel, superior kerosene oil, high speed diesel, light diesel oil, and mineral turpentine oil; and furnace oil, low sulphur heavy stock, bitumen, and lubricants. The company’s marketing network includes installations, depots, aviation service stations, retail outlets, LPG bottling plants, and LPG distributors.Like HPCL, this state owned downstream fuel retailer too posted a net loss of Rs.3229.27 crore for Q2FY12 as against a net profit of Rs.2142.22 crore it posted in Q2FY11. This again was despite a 19% rise in total income at Rs. 42680.59 crore. High crude oil and product prices, which could not be fully passed on the consumers impacted the performance.Thanks to the subsidy, it lost Rs.64,900 crore on selling diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene at government-controlled rates that are way below the cost of production. Of this, Rs 43,526 crore pertains to Q1FY12 and remaining Rs.21,374 crore for Q2FY12. It got Rs.8,575.35 crore during H1Fy12 from upstream firms to party make up for the losses it incurred on fuel sales but no cash subsidy from the Govt. It’s GRM was at $2.31 per barrel in H1FY12 v/s $3.19 per barrel in H1FY11. The company has declared that it is losing Rs.7.06 per litre on diesel, Rs 25.90 per litre on kerosene sold through the public distribution system (PDS) and Rs 270.50 per 14.2-kg LPG cylinder supplied to domestic households for cooking purposes.
